“Five Paths: A Well-Rounded Approach to Tango”
Matthew has written a book! A very short book. One could almost call it a longish essay. It's called Five Paths: A Well-Rounded Approach to Tango, and it’s written for anyone who wants to improve their tango but feels stuck or at a plateau.
In this book, Matthew describes five different “paths” you can take to improve your tango, only one of which is learning the dance itself. What are the other four? You’ll have to read the book to find out! This book was written for Tango Wednesday students, but it is also for anyone who wants to deepen their experience in tango. We at Tango CLT hope you will find something in “Five Paths” helpful, and maybe even inspirational.
Matthew has enlisted the fabulous Bill Temples to illustrate the book! Bill is a Charlotte treasure, and Matthew wanted to celebrate his art in these pages. Here are some of his wonderful drawings that will accompany each chapter, using the iconic Argentine cartoonist Quino as his inspiration.
Artist William Hudson Temples writes: "I have long been a fan of the comic strip and the cartoonists who created them. As a kid, I was captivated by the work of George Herriman, Charles Schulz, Robert Crumb, Hergé and many, many others...
Later I discovered the work of Quino, the Argentinian cartoonist best known for Mafalda. While familiarity with Spanish can improve one’s appreciation of the strip, it is not essential because many of his comics are entirely wordless. In these pieces, reminiscent of silent film, narratives are conveyed entirely through line, gesture, and composition. With remarkable economy, Quino could define a character, tell a story, or deliver sharp social commentary, often with unexpected irony...
When invited to illustrate "Five Paths: A Well-Rounded Approach to Tango," I approached the drawings as a tribute to Quino. The illustrations here are informed by his visual language and sensibility. It is my hope that people enjoy them and remember one of the greatest cartoonists of all time-Quino."
